About Pit Fired pottery

Pit firing is the oldest form of firing pottery, dating back thousands of years. The process begins by nestling unglazed pottery in a fire pit along with layers of combustibles, like wood, wood shavings, compost materials and salt. Glaze ingredients are sometimes added to achieve specific colors. Everything is set on fire, and kept burning for a few hours. The pit is then covered with a sheet metal and left to cool. Fire and smoke create patterns and colors as they react in the pit. Each pit fire produces different characteristics depending on temperature, as well as materials used, making each piece unique.

Please note: Pit fired pottery is not food safe.
